Brazil waives visas for visitors from the US, Canada, Australia and Japan

On March 18, 2019, Decree No. 9.731 was published in the Official Gazette of the Union, which deals with the exemption of the visitor visa for nationals of the USA, Canada, Australia and Japan who wish to enter Brazil.

Citizens of these countries who wish to visit Brazil will no longer need to apply for or pay for a visa.

This visa exemption will apply to visitors arriving in Brazil for tourism, business, transit, artistic or sporting activities, or in exceptional circumstances in the national interest, without intending to establish residence in the country. These visitors may stay in Brazil for up to 90 days, with the possibility of extending this period for an additional 90 days, provided that their stay does not exceed 180 days in a 12-month period.

The new provision was enacted as a unilateral initiative by newly elected President Jair Bolsonaro, aimed at strengthening relations with countries considered strategic to boost tourism in the country, as well as increasing private sector investment. Currently, Brazil receives approximately 6,5 million foreign visitors annually. The Brazilian government's goal is for this number to reach 12 million per year by 2022.

The new rule will come into effect on June 17, 2019. Therefore, until then, an e-visa will continue to be required for visitors from these four countries.
